It is really hard to find a precise definition about urban fashion. Urban fashion originates from hip hop culture and you certainly know that there is no written rule about how exactly one real hop hip artist should look like (when it comes to his clothes). In the past people often linked one fashion style with some music – people wearing dark tight clothes were usually listening to heavy metal for example. Today these things are changed.
The beauty of urban fashion is that anyone can wear it regardless of his music preferences.
Despite the evolvement, urban fashion remains closely linked with hip hop music. Ever since hip hop artists started to wear sweatshirts and t-shirts with graffiti like motifs these pieces of clothing became part of the urban youth’s closets. Of course, trends change – sometimes more bright colors are popular, sometimes the clothes are less baggy but this is a distinctive style that relies on several rules. It is a fact that urban fashion has its roots in the style of dressing that was practiced among African American youths in larger American cities (New York, Los Angeles, Detroit, Philadelphia etc.). This is probably the reason why we cannot have a precise definition of this fashion. This fashion is not related to only one city and one group of people, it is more like a mixture of different groups of people living in urban areas. Urban fashion has evolved and changed over the past two decades. Today people regardless of their ethnicity follow this fashion. We are not talking only about people in USA, but people all over the world too.

Some of these necessary pieces of clothes that are part of urban fashion include – t-shirts, caps and lately wristbands. The t-shirts are usually a little bit larger than regular t-shirts. They often carry some message on them and these messages are usually written in s-called urban fonts. Some of them may carry some social messages related to the views usually advocated in hip hop songs. Wristbands and caps are also popular accessories that spice up the look of many urban gentlemen. Even after all these years it is still popular to wear caps with shiny motifs on them. Wearing the cap a little bit aside is characteristically a sign of urban defiance to the mainstream trends. The wristbands usually carry messages and replace the boring watches that we are usually used to see on men’s wrists.
It’s good to mention that many hip hop artists today have their own fashion labels and some of them are practically dictating the latest trends in urban fashion. Some of them include P.Diddy (Sean Jean), Jay-Z (Rocawear), Insane Clown Posse (Hatchetgear) etc. However, many people are disappointed by the price of the products these fashion brand offer which is opposite to the message they spread with their songs. Urban fashion is one of the rare fashion styles that successfully manages to stay popular after such a long period.
